Unit 3/4 Silent movie/clash of concerts

Context unit 3/4: We have commissioned a project requiring a 2/3 silent films with original scores, which are to be performed with live acting and music at an external venue, (hopefully The Camden peoples theatre) and internally here at the college. This is a real commission and must be approached professionally. You will be working as a team with both musicians from L2 music and students from L2/3 creative media, as well as meetings with the directors to discuss proposals with the project management. The sessions and assignment will fulfil a unique experience for you as actors realising the disciplines of both work to a camera and collaborative work in the performing arts sector.


Research unit 3/4: So to research for the silent movie we watched YouTube videos so we can combine different techniques that their using so we can create our own silent movie. By watching YouTube I saw that a few of these were doing a similar thing which were:


1/ The tramp-Charlie Chaplin
2/Nosferatu
3/The cabinet of Dr Cagliari
4/Harold Lloyd &Buster Keaton comedies 


Problem solving unit 3/4: So Rob told us we had to get into groups for our silent movie by using the props we were given to by Rob himself we had to create a 2/3 minute performance but it got to the day of our performance and some people didn't have a partner so Rob decided to combine the rest of the class together to create a piece which ended up really well as we filmed and polished it up.

On Tuesday 30th of October we began our next unit which is based around the dumb waiter with Rob in 222. So we were all given a new block of work and told that we're going to create a silent movie surrounding around the dumb waiter to do this Rob handed us our scrips and told us he was going to assign our groups on Thursday, before that we all took turns to plays the characters in the play which there are only two of them who are Gus and Ben and there both waiters. On the same exact day we had a lesson with Mandy in 034 but as Mandy didn't really have a clue what the play was a about so she told us to give her a summary of the play so she knows what she can help us with but to begin with we done a warm the same as unit 1 but with a twist then after we had to learn a rhythm which was:

On Thursday 1st November we were working on some mime techniques to incorporate it with the dumb waiter which we used in our set task with our assigned partners. So what we done was we had to use the stimuli that we were given which was to be painting a wall and with something going horribly wrong with one of us having a higher status to the other for us to be recorded by Rob so it can be put onto our blogs.




On Friday 2nd November we also done some mime techniques involving us drinking a cup of tea and eating some crisps then we had to use this to create a short performance that will be shown to the class and video again which went well.




On the week of Monday 5th November we were in K034 and I received a letter that I was going to watch Hamilton which put a smile on my face, then we had to wait for the  rest of our class to begin our first lesson of the day which was that Rob told us to work on a performance that we were going to perform to the class in order from the first page to the last page and got told that it will be filmed the following lesson.



 On Tuesday we went to watch Hamilton which went well and I enjoyed meeting and talking to the cast in the Q&A which was an honour. The same exact week we all went through our performance that we've been working on for weeks so that Rob can go round and help us to adapt to what we're doing and make it better ready to be filmed in front of the green screen which going to be a good experience.



On Monday 12th November we worked on developing character by showing what we have come up with so far and show it to the class. We were told that the important thing is to listen and play off each other when were performing our duologues, another important thing that was told to us is to register the fact that one of the two character has a higher status to the other. We need to also understand that we need to always have through process reason why they say the word in the script. Then we had to say what were getting out of everything were doing and I told myself that I developed my listening, reacting, memory, creative and physical skills.

 Also the second year level three came and showed us their performance so we can give the some feedback.



On Tuesday 13th we had a lesson with Mandy which was that we had to show her one movement that we do in our performance and elaborate on it with her assistance, we were then asked to give feedback fir the rest of our class mates except of my myself which started with Ahmed < very exaggerating body language> Shabir < he exaggerated his handcuff scene and had great facial expression. Cinzia< used very clear when she worked on it because before it was a little generic. Kaliyah< her body language was clear and very directed, showed good facial expressions. May< after corpsing she managed to not corpse which made her movement successful by using her entire body to show she is pregnant. Jorge< movement was quick and clear because  the type of scenario used and good  facial expressions.


 Tianna< exaggerating and accurate movement was used so she can use that to hit the flower on someone. Also as some of us weren't in the lesson I had to sit in for that person which showed I cared about the person performing so I helped them out by doing it with them. 


On Thursday 15th we were put into our dump waiter groups and were told one of us to be Gus and the other to be Ben. So we began our lesson by creating a short story which will be used to create a performance so we came up with our idea then we were told to perform it to the entire class which was an improvement because we had to perform it more than once as it wasn't going to plan . Then we watched the rest of our class mates performance which all went the right direction.

On Friday 16th November we were in 222 with Rob but to begin with we done a warm up which involved putting on a piece of music and going round the circle so everything can do a dance move to it and the rest has to copy what there doing. After we went to the back of the room and were told to read the tongue twister out in a way an opera singer would do. Then at the end we were asked to all go through our dumb waiter performances which we all showed it in the order it says in script. The last piece of work we done was that we were asked to sit in a circle to be given a class and group feedback which was:
  1. learn lines (homework)
  2. If difficult ask
  3. try and lift of the page when performing
  4. Myself and Cinzia - good relationship, timing and pace
  5. see cricketers
  6. look at each other
  7. slow down when saying lines.
On Monday we had a double lesson of acting class, to begin with we played a game of tag and played winked murders. After that we got into our dumb waiter pairs so that we can go through the play with a twist, the twist was that we were given a theme and using it we had to perform it without using the script so we had lift of the script. The second acting class we had was in the theatre which was that each of us had to perform our scene while the rest of the class sat at the back of the theatre and were chosen to at a time to give feedback to actors at the front. Then at the end of the lesson we all sat in a circle as Rob gave all of a pep talk in 5 minutes.



The same weak we had acting in 222 so we were told to sit at the back of the room so that Rob can work with the ones who need the most assistance by all of us remaining watching and giving feedback and by all us getting to know what the themes are which are: hit man, comedy, death etc.
Also on that day we had a lesson with Mandy in K034 which was that we all had to perform and show what we've done so far so that the rest of the class gave us feedback by writing it down on a given sheet.



On Thursday we were in K034 and we done a trust exercise which was that one of us was A and the other was B and we had to stand one in front and the other behind to do this we had to guide the one in front around the class with their eyes closed then swap over, we then had to work on our scenes ready to be shown to the entire with only one minute to perform. The same day we had a session with Jay which put me out of my comfort zone.



Monday we had a lesson in the theatre as the exact same week we had our performance which had to go to plan so we had to put as much rehearsal time as possible, to do this we all showed our pieces to Rob in order as it is in the script so that he knows who he needs to work with so that they can perfect their play up to scratch and add any props that will be used on the day.



On Tuesday we had a lesson in K034 with Rob and we were told to sit near the mirror so we can all run through our dumb waiter but as I came late another group had to perform instead. Then they we done and me and my partner went up next and we got the all clear from Rob. The same day we had a lesson with Mandy but before that we had an announcement from Rebecca saying that their was an accident that occurred in the dance studio which involved a student wearing fluffy socks and slipped so she ended up breaking her back and wrist so that means that we have to wear dance or jazz shoes with us females wearing no earring's and necklaces. We then began our lesson by all of us being given a sheet that we had to use when each of us perform we had to wright an EBI and WWW for each group or partner.



Thursday was the day of our dumb waiter performance and we had a dress code which was to wear a white shirt with some black trousers so to begin the day we had a bit of time to rehearsal in K034 which was needed as I was very nervous as I was shaking so the extra rehearsal time was very crucial at this particular moment. We actually had a chance to have the dance studio to have a bit of practice time which was very important, so it was time to put all the rehearsal time and practice together to show our audience what we've been working on for weeks.



Level 2"dumb waiter" Evaluation: At the start of this unit I already developed my confidence so I was ready to be given a challenge like this one as we were told that we were going to do the dumb waiter which involved a script and us learning lines which I thought would of been a struggle for me but actually I was incorrect because it didn't take me that long to learn all my lines. So with all that practice and rehearsal time we had to perform it to an audience but something went wrong as the group that were suppose to perform first one of their group members arrived late so that me and my partner had to go first my heart dropped I was like to myself is this real an I actually doing this, it's true I'm doing this it's now or never. As soon as we finished and sat down I told myself it wasn't that bad and I wasn't nervous or scared anymore and I wanted to do it again and again. The only thing I would change would be the seating arrangement as when we were all performing I felt we were to close to each other white had to change but other than that my performance went well and I plan which put a smile on my face.

           

On Monday we were in K034 with Rob and we came into the class room to begin the lesson but before that we done a warm up which I didn't enjoy but just went with the flow. Then we played a game of (splat) and (zap zap bong) so it can get us in the correct zone ready for our lesson to begin. Rob told us to sit in a circle because we were going to start writing up our evaluation before all that we were given a sheet so we can write up what skills we've developed from the performance, then Rob gave us our feedback so we can write it down.


Tuesday we had a lesson with Rob but we were still continuing to record our silent movies in the production room and the rest of us were in 222 waiting for our turn but we still haven't filmed ours which is disappointing but still looking forward to it. The second part of the day we had a lesson with Mandy in K034 to start our lesson but before we had a dispute over an incident that took place in the dance studio which meant we had to either wear socks, jazz shoes or trampoline socks but some were not pleased with the decision so they didn't want to take part in the lesson so we continued with out them. To begin with we had to write down on a big piece of paper -What actors may be asked to do in terms of physical skill? and my group came up with these:


  • hand gestures
  • body language
  • volume
  • facial expression
  • memory

Then we were asked to give our sheet to another group and they wrote:

  • Running
  • stunts
  • jumping
  • climbing
  • fight/action

We done the exact same thing by giving our sheet to another group and they wrote:

  • confidence
  • voice projection
  • flexibility
  • child like
  • trust
  • thick skin
  • eye contact
  • time management
  • be ready

After doing all of that we were put into groups so we can start a very physical activity which was that we had to pick the lightest group member and try and lift then off the ground so we could decide between Cinzia and klylia so we tried both of then and found out that Cinzia was light, then showed the rest of the class what we were working on. Then got split into two groups so we can begin our next activity which was to lift a class mate as a class which went really well.





On Monday we had no lesson in the morning as Rob had to focus on the level 3 2nd years as they had their Christmas carol on the same week so they had to put in and have as much rehearsal time as possible so our lesson got cancelled. In our second lesson we were in 222 and Rob told us who ever hasn't done their silent movie is to go to the right of the room so that he can see what his going to do about our silent movie which was going to take place in the green screen room. To begin with Rob started with Mya because she's going to be the main character in the entire movie.





 Which was that she will be sitting down on a chair with her baby in her arms showing love to it, who come in Shevell holding a glass cup then she took a seat and started to make some nose which involved her putting her finger on top of the cup and creating a circular motion that made nose.


 Shevell then tried to offer her some of her drink to Mya but she told her "no", then see asked her a second time and she still told her "no" it was a third time in which she asked her and they both swapped meaning Mya had the glass cup and Shevell had the baby. Rob then moved on with me and I had a my own prop which was an arm so I had to pretend that the arm was a baby and show some love for it, then Mya noticed her baby wasn't there and she started to cry.





Who came along after Irene and she had a tea pot she also had to imagine it was a baby and with Mya noticing she cried because her baby still wasn't there. After Irene was Shabir and he had a house telephone he also had to imagine that was a baby he to had show some love to it, Mya noticed and cried once again. Then Shevell returned with Mya baby she didn't notice the first time but realised the second time she looked that her baby returned and she was surprised and couldn't believe her eyes, this was in 222 because wanted to rehearse with us then we went into the green screen room and Rob told us we were aloud to go home.



On Tuesday we had no normal lesson's except Mandy lesson which took place in K035 but she told us that we all had to work on our fitness so we came up with a work out but before that we had to check our resting heart rate so that we can begin our lesson to do that we got into 3 rows and started with our exercise which was we begin a left to right step which involved us balancing our weight from left to right. We then done another exercise which was the same with a little twist to it by doing both of them eight times each. Mandy told us to move on to another fitness exercise which was we had to imagine we were skipping, then make huge circles with our hands and repeat that until she tells us to stop.

Thursday we were in K034 with Rob but he wasn't really focused with us completely as he was working on the Level three second years Christmas carol as they were performing today and we were invited to come along to watch which was amazing and touching to watch. Rob still gave us an assignment to do which was to create a performance about a delivery that goes wrong and who ever produces the best wins a prize which I was looking forward to.





So to begin with we came up with an idea which was that I was the main character about to go to work but running late so I had to rush out the house but because I knew I was going to be late I called an Ubu cab to come and collect me so I left the house but on the other side of the road were a couple Shevell and Shabir and they were also waiting for a cab as well, I was crossing the road and got hit by their Ubu we then started to think maybe this isn't the best idea so we decided as a group to change the entire performance with me still being the main character.





So our brand new idea was that I was a teacher but Shevell, Joey and Shabir were students with Shabir being a new student it began with me introducing Shabir to the class Joey coming in late to class, I asked a question to the class but Shevell and Joey get it wrong but Shabir gets it right I dismiss the class at the end of the class Shevell and Joey beat up Shabir I go stop it the first time they lie that nothings going so I leave it then I go back the second time and they were swearing and trying to fight him so I stopped it and were finished. Rob gave us one verbal feedback saying that we were at the back of the room the whole time so we had to stay towards the front of the room.





Friday all our acting class lessons were cancelled as the level three second years were still performing their Christmas carol to people inside and outside the college so we only had maths and English lessons on this day.
       

On Tuesday we had our final acting class of the year which was very upsetting but I'm looking forward in what challenges I'll be faced with and over come. So in our lesson all we done was play improve games with Rob and our little special twist, to do this we began with our first improve game but to do this Rob gave us a starting and ending line that we had to use  but in this game we had to come up with them on our own so one of us had to be A and the other B and if A says "let's go and play football" B has to do the action and develop it further the group that does the more will win a prize which was some chocolate. 



We then moved on with our next improve game which still involved around A and B but instead A would do an action for example trying to punch and B would react to it and you had to get as many as possible and if you do you'll receive a prize. The actual improve games started so the first one was we had to start with the line "I'm exhausted" and end with the line "go on then let's go" So me and my partner came up with this idea that we were supposed to go to our granddad house but my partner Cinzia was exhausted so I kept on nagging and nagging her but she wouldn't listen so I told her I  give her £20 will she come with me and she replied with the ending line "go in then let's go.



 So we moved on to our second improve game which started with the line "you'll be fine" but for the ending line we had a choice of either saying "I love you" or saying " I hate you" but under your breath so me and my friend went for the second opinion o saying "I hate you" under mg breath but here is what we came up with, Cinzia just lost her mum but I never knew because she never used to tell her best friend anything so I told he she'll be fine but because of that I lost a good friend so I told her I hated her under my breath while going out of the room at the same time. 



It got to the second to last improve game and this one started with the line "I don't think we should be here" and ended with the line " stop it's behind you" so this one was that me and Cinzia were visiting a old abandoned house but Cinzia was having second thoughts about visiting it but I told her there were some spiders and rats to just freak her out even more, so then told me she hears a noise and told her don't even worry about it then I saw something behind her and told her to stop something's behind you so I hit her and she fell on the fall.


We got to our final  improve game which was a little change this time Rob didn't give us a starting or ending but we had a theme which was the day before Christmas , I idea was that we done a flash back of me dead on the floor and Cinzia crying we then moved on to me and Cinzia enjoying our Christmas lunch and I realised that we didn't have Brussels sprouts so I told Cinzia that'll go get some but as I went in the shop to get it someone came out of no where and shot me so I was dead on the floor and Cinzia was next to me crying.
